Mood Board

To help get an idea of what type of model would be better suited to appear on my magazine I created a mood board I made a moodboard reflecting my target audience personality culture and interests in life. This inspired me in choosing my new model.

Practice Shots

Here are my original Practice Shots I have decided not to use them in my final production as I don't think the model is appropriate a R&B female artist's are powerfull and womanly in these shots the model looks youthfull, pretty and innocent.

Artist Costume

In my original practice shots My Artists has two key looks,

The first is a party look made up of a play suit, Glitzy costume jewellery and Pastry trainers. I have used this look as it reflect's the theme of the magazine Christmas & New year as it is a December issue and it is party season the T.A may be looking for ideas and inspiration from their favourite artits, although this look is dressed up the artist wears trainers as they are a fashion icon of R&B stars, the target audience will recognise these trainers, as the creaters Vanessa & Angela Simmons who have their own reality t.v series on MTV, their fame is stems from their Father a Hip-Hop music icon, Run, his brother Russell Simmons is the co-founder of Def Jam records a major record label who deal with stars such as Rhianna and Ne-Yo.

The second look I have used is a festive look of a vintage pale pink cosy christmas jumper teamed with leggings and uggs. This shows the artists down-to-earth side, as I will be using this image for her interview which is conducted inside her home, where she gives us her take on her musical story and gets into the festive mood as she shares some of her personal christmas snaps.

Artist Hair & Make-Up

I have used this make-up tutourial by beauty guru beauty crush, inspired Rhianna, one of the artists who would feature in my music magazine. The look has been taken from her music video for her song 'Hard' it is just one of the various makeup looks that features in her video. I have also attached the video here, I like this look as the smokey-eyes and bright pink lipstick give my model a edgy but glamourous look. There are two different hair looks used, the first is a swept up curly bun, I have used this on the front cover and the double page spread, so the target audience can clearly see her face making the interview feel personal. The second look is big curls used on the contents page image, reflecting the artists glamour.

Analysis of the ____ Magazine & the ____ Magazine

R&B Magazine Codes + Conventions

I have choosen to create an R&B magazine for females. In preparation for this I have analysed the image of five different artists that will be representitive of the artists I will feature in my music magazine, Alicia Keys, Beyonce, Leona Lewis, Nicki Minaj and Rhianna. In this section I will talk about the codes and conventions of R&B magazines and how they represent females.

R&B music magazine's conventionally represent females as sex objects, because the target audience are male, currently there are no R&B magazines that are aimed at females.
Women are often shown wearing bikinis or other types of revealing outfits. The main sell line related to them often pulls in the male reader more, and includes pin-up style posters.

Instead of exploiting and degrading female R&B artist's I want to represent them not just a sex object, but for the person they are.

Image Analysis: Leona Lewis

In this image of Leona Lewis she is walking along the beautiful shores, this is a romantic setting reflecting the nature of the songs. It's also very nautral showing that music comes naturally to her. She is wearing a long brown maxi dress, reflecting the summery settings. Her hair and dress are blowing in the wind freely reflecting her free spirit. Her make-up is a dramatic red lip and thick black eyeliner showing her glamourous diva style music.

Image Analysis: Beyonce

This image of Beyonce was taken in promotion for her album Beyonce Knowles : I am Sasha Fierce. This image has been taken in black and white, this shows the darkness of some of the themes about love in her album. The background is plain black making the Beyonce stand out. Beyonce is posed crouching in a almost animal-like position showing the wildness of her stage alter-ego Sasha Fierce. Her eyebrows are defined and her eye-make up is dark and dramatic reflecting some of the dark themes about love running through her songs and drawing attention to her eyes. Her hair is styled in a dramatic quiff this is an icon asscoaited with her hit 'Single Ladies' featuring on her Sasha Fierce album. In this image Beyonce is wearing a black leotard an icon of style associated with the 'Single Ladies' video. It has been customised with a metal stud strap she is also wearing a glove made from some kind of metal this reflects her tough resilient attitude and unbreakable ego.

Image Analysis: Nicki Minaj

This image of Niki Minaj was taken in promotion for her new debut album pink Friday in the new york daily news entertainment section of their web page. In this image Niki is dressed in a prom style dress with a dramatic tutu style train, reflecting her drama-queen personality. She is wearing a bubble-gum pink wig, Minaj says "When I get up in the morning and put on a pink or a green wig, I see myself as a piece of animation," she says. "It lets me be the person I want to be, a person who's not embarrassed to have fun." The pink wig also relates to just one of her altrenative persona's Barbie, based on the blonde plastic doll, linking into her own image as she is 'plastic' after having plastic surgery. Her trademark catchphrase on many of her song's is 'it's barbie b****'. Her make-up is dramatic two with a matching pink lipstick and thick black flase eyelashes. She is also wearing silver bangles matching her dress reflecting her glamourous side. She is wearing sky-high diva shoes, which make a big statement like the rest of her outfit. This is almost a fantasy like image as everything is over-exaggerated and colourful. Minaj says
"The animated bug has bitten pop culture," Minaj says. "It makes me feel happy and free. When you don't act seriously, you can make up your own rules.
Her pose is unique, it she is sitting on the floor with her arm on one leg, looking quite masculine, contrasting with the pink feminine theme of the image. Showing the masculine image and ego she maintains whilst rapping.

Image Analysis: Alicia Keys

This is an image of Alicia Keys on a photoshoot. This image has been taken in black and white, giving the image a vintage theme. Furthermore the photo reflects her pure natural beauty because of the basic format used. We cannot see the makeup she however we know she is wearing thick black winged eye make-up follwing the vintage theme. Her hair has is in natraul spiral curls.
She is posed so she is smiling, showing that she is happy and enjoying herself. It shows her passion for music as she is playing the piano. The background has not been edited the natraul surroundings have been kept suggesting that perhaps this is a in action shot.

Image Analysis: Rhianna

In this image of Rhianna, was taken from her interview with Marie Claire. In this image she is not smiling this could be to reflect the serious tone of the interview. She is posed so her hands are running through her hair. This shows off her new fiery red locks, reflecting her new era and take on the world. Her make up is kept simple, with a pink nude lipstick and bronzed cheeks. Her eyemakeup is pale green shimmer, brining out her eyes. Her make up is kept simple so not to deattract any attention from her hair.
She is wearing a tight white dress embellished with crystals showing her wealth. You can see one of her tattos peeping through the dress on her left shoulder showing her rebellious side.
The image background is a neutral gradient of grey to white. The bottom is darker gradually getting lighter towards the top drawing attention to her face.

I created a questionnaire to find out what my Target Audience wanted from a music magazine and also to find out, whether to aim it males or females. I found my reasearch very usefull as it gave me ideas and inspiration as to what would appeal to my T.A and what would make them buy my magazine.

Pre-liminary Task

Before I set out on my main task of creating three pieces of media texts for my music magazine, I undertook a pre-liminary task of creating a contents page, this task was helpfull in preparing me for the main task as I gained knowledge and confidence in using photoshop. Aswell as gaining an understanding about the research and planning that goes into creating a magazine. The task was to create a front cover for a magazine for sixth form students. Below is my mock-up's for the contents page and front cover. As well as the final product.
